The Oral HIstory Project: Memories of Tuberculosis
September 13, 2018
As construction of the Cure Porch on Wheels moves forward, the Oral History Project continues to expand. With 68 interviews conducted thus far this year, the Oral History Project is rapidly amassing a trove of local knowledge. To make these interviews accessible, Historic Saranac Lake has created an online archive where historians, students, or hobbyists can listen to hours of interview audio. Included in this archive is a curated collection of stories relating to the tuberculosis industry in Saranac Lake. Here you can listen to first hand accounts of people whose lives were affected by tuberculosis. Listen to Elise Chapin describe being diagnosed with tuberculosis in her early 20s. Or hear about the experience at Raybrook Sanatorium from Wilhelmina England. These powerful stories are just a small example of the wealth of information collected by the Oral History Project. HSL will bring more curated content to the website as the project expands with the eminent completion of the Cure Porch on Wheels.
